SADLY, Sunday evening (April 28), Otis flew down to get some food and hit his head on the ground at the bottom of his cage. He died during the night.  I had debated with a government agency that this one-eyed owl should NOT have a big cage even though he could fly.  One eye means he had no depth perception and could not judge distances well.  But typically, federal government bureaucratic laws and regulations demanded a huge flight cage.  Apparently his past injury from being hit by a car might have made his brain or eye more vulnerable to another head trauma.  As the federal government takes over more and more control of our country (health care, etc), these kinds of legal regulations and results will increasingly impact our human lives as they did to Otis.

Hopefully you all are managing your time well in order to complete a solid Science Olympiad project and presentation.
Remember that a science fair project is graded and judged NOT by your experiement's results but by your work (preparation, procedure, analysis, paper, and board).
So if your results end up proving your hypothesis wrong, THAT IS OK.
Many great science discoveries came about because of experiments that did NOT support the original hypothesis.
If this happens in your experiment, just be sure to discuss in your analysis and conclusion many reasons why you think your results happened that way.

Students,
With the new textbook this year, I am having to create all new tests each unit, so this test was only completed this weekend.
THIS TEST:
It will cover the majority of the vocab from the quiz you already took (matching), then a number of critical thinking and graph interpretation questions that require you to apply your understanding of those vocab terms/concepts. So there is virtually nothing new for you to study beyond the vocab. GRAPHS/CHARTS:
In class I reminded you to go through the power point and study the graphs/charts as practice for the graph/chart interpretation questions.
ACT SCIENCE SECTION PRACTICE:
Remember, these are the types of questions that make up the "Science" section of the ACT Test.  The ACT is really NOT a "Science" testing assessment.  Almost no science "content" is required.  It is really an IQ, reading, and analytical/critical thinking assessment.
FUTURE GUIDES: STUDY GUIDES are a gift privilege not a right that should be expected each time.  They will not be given in upper classes or in college science classes.  The professor will simply assign 3-4 chapters, lecture on them, then expect the student to study all of it.  So as we progress through the year as a college prep high school we will gradually model the college method.

* Tests such as the ACT have become the make or break key to college entrance. Even though there is a great deal of research on both sides of the debate of such assumptions, the current reality is that a student's grade on the ACT will determine college entrance, possible TOPS & stipends.
* However, the "Science" section of the ACT does not really test for science content. The ACT science section actually is a test of a student's IQ and skill at analytical thinking, especially regarding graph analysis and math application. Nothing can increase a student's IQ, but analytical skills can be learned and improved.
* Therefore, it is vital that students planning on college need to regularly practice graph analysis and math application.

Unit Method:
This will be a unit applying these crucial skills, while learning:
1. How & why the standardized tests are created.
2. Tips/Tricks to efficiently scan test questions for needed information.
(avoiding the test makers' intentional "distracters")
3. Tips/Tricks for effectively answering standardized test questions.
4. As our year unfolds, each new science unit will include more graphs and math application to further practice these skills.
5. I recommend that parents/students also practice at home, using suggested internet sites in the OPTIONAL box below.

The textbooks I use for my various science classes are excellent, SECULAR (Non-Christian) resources providing some of the finest overviews of "operational/observational" biological science available today. However, since it is a SECULAR (Non-Christian) textbook, its presentation of "historical/origins" science presents an atheistic, macroevolutionary worldview. This is good, since it allows our students the opportunity to exercise logikos, critical thinking while evaluating the evidence for a macroevolutionary vs. a micro (creation/adaptation) worldview of life origins.
