The textbooks I have used for my various science classes are excellent, SECULAR (Non-Christian) resources providing some of the finest overviews of "operational/observational" biological science available today. However, being SECULAR (Non-Christian) textbooks, their presentation of "historical/origins" science presents an atheistic, macroevolutionary worldview. This is actually good, since it allows our students the opportunity to exercise logikos, critical thinking while evaluating the evidence for a macroevolutionary vs. a creation worldview of life origins. To facilitate this critical thinking, we integrate research from world renowned scientists that are also courageously biblical, Christian/Creationists standing against censorship and peer-pressure persecution to speak the truth about our Creator and His Good Shepherd character.  They include:

TEXTBOOK / COURSE MATERIALS:

All of us in the NCS Middle School Bible department are excited about the new Answers Bible Curriculum we will begin this year.  It’s a three-year chronological study of God’s history (i.e., His-story) developed by a team from Answers in Genesis.  Answers in Genesis (AiG) is an apologetics ministry that includes internationally recognized scholars in both Scripture and science.  AiG is committed to training Christians to honor God our Father, defend their faith, and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ in a loving and effective way.  

The Answers Bible Curriculum (ABC) teaches students how to apply Bible interpretation skills (hermeneutics).  It presents the history of the world in seven key historical periods called the “7-C’s” that are easy to remember.  Relevant Scripture verses and passages will be memorized for life application.  The first “C” stands for Creation, because our Creator’s revelation of ORIGINS (how, why, and when He created all things) is the foundation undergirding every major Christian doctrine.  Since Christ, God’s Word - our Creator - is the cornerstone of this foundation, our 8th graders will begin at the beginning.  They will start with the foundational truths of Genesis and then work/walk their way on through Exodus. All along the way, students will utilize the rest of the Bible, learning to interpret each passage in the context of all Scripture. 

Supplemental Materials for CRITICAL THINKING about evolution vs. creation:
* New content will be included, especially exciting updates from a symposium on genetics, epigenetics, and Intelligent Design that I was invited to attend on the campus of Cornell University in 2011. Twenty-five scientists presented to about 100 attendees, most of whom were PhD scientists or PhD students (yes I was way out of my league -J).  These scholars shared amazing new discoveries, research, and conclusions demonstrating the impossibility of macroevolution by mutations. The only logical, scientific, and of course spiritual explanation for the massive coded information in living systems is a supernatural Intelligent Designer NOT natural chemical processes. To facilitate this critical thinking when we discuss Scripture passages about ORIGINS, students will examine research from world renowned scholars that are Christian/Creationists.

* For most students the first week of school is like a flood of new information, new schedules, and new tasks (especially trying to get iPads and programs set up and running properly. Introduction: An Unapologetically Evidentially-Presuppositional
Approach to Apologetics

Any effort to explain God's revealed truths must be handled with prayerful humility (1 Cor 13:12-13; 2 Tim 2:14-15, 23-26; Jam 3:1). His ways and His thoughts are beyond the greatest of human minds (Exo 3:14; Exo 33-34; Isa 55:8-9; 57:15; Micah 5:2; Mat 6:10; 1 Tim 6:16; etc.). His Word is profound enough for any PhD, yet simple enough for any child to understand and live (Mat 18:1-6).

Terms like "paradox" and "antinomy" fall short of explaining truths that bridge the intellectual chasm between human comprehension and God's reality. We are like the two dimensional beings of Edwin Abbott's fictional "Flatland", who were unable to perceive and unwilling to believe in a three dimensional reality. Like the "Flatlanders", we are, therefore, dependent on direct revelation from someone who transcends our realm. We are spiritually blind apart from the gracious light of our Creator's Word.

Every man views the world through a personal perceptual filter. It may be the evolutionary axioms of atheism or the scriptural presuppositions of biblical creation. Whatever worldview a man has will affect the way he interprets the evidence to which he is exposed. Genuinely biblical faith is not based upon blind belief or mystically subjective feelings. Neither is it achieved by the intellectual ruminations of human reasoning. Only God can bring a man to saving faith, by grace alone.

However, the Holy Spirit of God has chosen to use evidences that He has made available to convict and draw men to embrace biblical truths, beginning with the Gospel. Across the world and through all of human history, only the Bible verifies its divine authorship with hundreds of prophetic proofs (Proverbs 14:15; Isaiah 41-48; 53; Hebrews 11:1). God, through Isaiah, promised to validate His Word by proclaiming the future before it occurred.

No Christian can persuade another man to believe the gospel or any other biblical truth apart from the work of God’s Holy Spirit. Nevertheless, we can and should (just as the Apostle Paul) use the objective evidences of historical reliability, prophetic fulfillment, the complementary relationship between science and Scripture, etc, to reveal the rational (logikos – logical) nature of Christian faith. Rational faith, therefore, must rest solidly on the Bible, unveiled directly from our Creator – who is high and lifted up, not bound by the limits of space, time, matter, and energy.

Therefore, all of the doctrines below are believed and proclaimed on the basis of a presuppositional apologetic. They are believed because they are clearly taught in the Bible, not because they are popular or pragmatically functional. God’s authority overrules man’s majority.

The significance of the Hebrew terms BARA and NEPHESH especially in Genesis 1.

BARA:
The Hebrew term “bara” means to create something brand NEW out of nothing that did not previously exist.  This term is only used for something that God can do, not man or angels.  There are other terms for “making” or “forming” new things by restructuring stuff that already existed.  That would be like me using an old wooden desk to make a set of shelves.  Both God and humans are described in the Bible being able to do this.

- Bara is used 3x’s in Gen 1 revealing three totally new things God created out of nothing:
   v.1 Matter; v.21 Nephesh Animals; v.27 Humans

NEPHESH:
The Hebrew term “nephesh” means a soul, which is a creature with the ability for feeling/thinking.
Nephesh creatures are able to suffer, fear, or feel joy. Nephesh chayah means a living soul.

Plants – God’s Word never uses the term “Nephesh” for plants.  And the term BARA is NOT used when God made plants, because they are NOT something new that did never exist before.  Plants are made of ONLY the same matter/atoms that make up the Earth.  Plants have no nephesh, no brain, so they cannot think or feel.  They are merely complex organic machines.  They do not suffer when cut up for food, clothing, wood, etc.  That is why Genesis 1:29-31 says that only vegetation/fruit were to be food for humans and nephesh animals.  Remember that fruit bats and pandas have teeth just like a carnivore.  Carnivores have adapted to eating meat after sin and separation from God that caused the infection of survival of the fittest in creation.  Only AFTER the global catastrophic flood (Genesis 9:3) did God give permission for the first time for humans (Noah and his family) to humanely kill and eat nephesh animals.  Also many kinds of invertebrates are never called nephesh in God’s Word.  Worms, oysters, jellyfish, and possibly even insects and spiders are like complex robotic drones that cannot think or feel, but merely respond to stimuli.  An insect has a leg bitten off, it just keeps on walking as if nothing happened.

Nephesh Animals – were not originally designed to kill and eat each other.  Pain, fear, suffering, and nephesh death was not God’s desire or design.  God is a Good Shepherd not a Great Predator.  Even when God gave permission for humans to eat meat to survive after the flood, He commanded they bury the animal’s blood in a memorial service because “the life (nephesh/soul) is in (represented by) the blood”.  God wanted us to remember that such suffering and death was not His original way.  The full Good News is that God promises when Christ returns, He will restore creation to its original Garden of Eden way (Romans 8).  The wolf, lion, leopard, and bear will eat grass like the lamb and the ox (Isaiah 11 and 65).

Nephesh Man – are unique and distinct from animals, NOT because we have souls (nephesh).  Vertebrate animals also have souls/nephesh.  We are special because we were made designed to reflect the image (character) of God and therefore have the ability to know and choose to follow or reject God as Lord.

DAY 7 God RESTED – He ceased from BARA type of creating.  God no longer creates totally new things out of nothing that never existed before.  However, He is still intimately involved in His creation and with His creatures, especially humans.

* BELOW for those of you who were absent is a summary of my discussion with the classes on Mon 11/2 .....

2. HUMAN Roles, Ranks, Responsibilities:

The primary ROLE for humans in God's creation is SERVANT LEADERSHIP.
- Genesis Ch 1 states that humans (male and female) were created in God's image, to reflect His kind of character.
- It says that humans were to rule over and have dominion over the other creatures. So clearly humans were given delegated authority under God's Lordship. Humans' role and rank of authority or leadership is certainly to be over the rest of creation.
* But the question we need to answer is:
"What kind of rulership should it be?"
Or "How should human leadership be done?"

- Chapter 2:15 further delineates the type of leadership humans were created to exercise over creation. Remember Ch. 1 says that humans' role should reflect the image and character of our Creator. So, two Hebrew terms are used in Gen 2:15 to describe human leadership that reflects the character of our Creator Christ (John 1:1-5).

1. The first is ABAD which is often translated as "cultivate" or "work". However, the term's primary meaning is "TO SERVE", and describes the role of a SERVANT. That means humans' rulership over the creation should be a SERVANT LEADERSHIP, NOT the tyrannical way of our current sinful, selfish world. This world is now infected by sin and separation from God, so that worldly leaders become predatory and parasitic politicians. They selfishly use, abuse, oppress, and enslave those under their authority.

2. The second term is SHAMAR which is often translated "to keep". Yet it does not merely mean to hold on to something as we often use the word "keep" today. Shamar conveys the meaning more like a ZOO-KEEPER, like I was back when I served at the Audubon Zoo caring for elephants, lions, tigers, bears, etc., and sort of still am even now with our little NCZoo classroom. The role, rank, and responsibility of a zookeeper is to protect, care for, and preserve the creatures in the zoo, including plants but especially the nephesh animals.

Christ's Way = the way of the cross, of love.
His way sacrifices self for the needs of others.
(Luke 9:23-26; Romans 5:5-10)

Sin's Way = survival of the fittest.
It's way sacrifices others for the desires of self.
It is the way of Satan/Lucifer and the basis of the philosophy of macroevolution: violent competition, pain, fear, suffering, and death.

** Jesus is the last Adam (Rom 5). If evolution is true then humans came from ape-men, not a literal Adam. That would mean that there was millions of years of violent survival of the fittest, suffering and death BEFORE humans existed. That would also mean that God designed the process of violent survival of the fittest, suffering and death to create all creatures and humans. This is not a little, minor issue. If there was no literal first human - Adam - who sinned and caused the first separation from God and the suffering and death, then Jesus - the last Adam - died for nothing. The good news is that we did not evolve and there was a literal Adam created by God. Suffering and death of animals and humans did not begin until AFTER Adam sinned, causing separation from God.

Genesis 3-6 IMPACT OF THE FALL: DYING YOU WILL DIE
* We will be examining the effects resulting from the separation between God and creation, due to sin.
* Your English translations say that God warned, "In the day you eat of it [the forbidden fruit] you will die". However the actual Hebrew phrase says much more. It literally says "In the day you eat of it dying you will die".
= a progressive process of disorder, dysfunction, decay, death

This is another example of how God's Word conveyed amazingly accurate scientific truths that were not clearly known to man until modern times. This profoundly simple little phrase powerfully expresses the fact that everything in creation has been progressively falling apart ever since sin and God's withdrawal of His full protection and provision. God gave Lucifer and Adam what they rebelliously chose: separation from Him and the opportunity to be their own little gods over creation. Since they are not God, every realm of created reality has been dying, spiritually, physically, psychologically, socially, and morally since that day.

- Spiritual Effects: separation from the only source of power, love, and wisdom
- Physical Effects: from atoms to astronomy, genetic mutations over time destroy bio-info and the ability of bio-systems to function as originally designed.
- Psychological Effects: "psyche" in Greek means soul. Spiritual separation from the Creator of our brains and souls results in decreasing ability to perceive, process, and perform psychologically. That is why NATURE JOURNAL recently reported that human IQ has been decreasiing over the centuries and learning disabilities are increasing. We are also born with a sin nature that causes us to be inherently selfish and self-deceptive about what is good and evil.
- Psycho-sociological Effects: Collective cultural conditioning of fallen souls (psyches) produces progressive corruption in societies as time unfolds.
- Moral Effects: All of previous effects result in ethical and moral decay revealing the depravity of the human heart.

Genesis 6:5-8 
Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
6 The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 The Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

Meat Eating allowed for the first time

- Remember the term NEPHESH means "SOUL" and is used for both humans and vertebrate animals. It means a creature with the ability to think and feel. Humans are unique since God gave us the ability to also know Him personally.
- Originally humans & all nephesh animals vegetarian
- After sin & survival of the fittest, many animals and people killed and ate animals against God's design
- Only after the food destroyed so many plants, God gave permission for humans to compassionately kill nephesh animals
- (see also Leveticus 17) BUT God commanded that the blood of HIS nephesh animals must be drained out and buried as a memorial of remembrance. The blood symbolically represented the "life" = nephesh (soul) of the animals. This memorial burial was so that humans would remember that nephesh animals were NOT designed by God to suffer and die to be our food.
God designed HIS nephesh animals to experience the joy and pleasure of the Garden of Eden, NOT the pain, fear, suffering, and death of survival of the fittest.
Later, God instituted a command that any Israelite who killed an animal for food but did not do this memorial service of burying the blood should be punished. The punishment was to be cut off from (kicked out of) Israel (Lev 17:1-14). God loves His nephesh animals infinitely more that we love our pet dogs and cats!

RACES? Nope, only one race: HUMAN

-There is NO such thing as "BLACK" or "WHITE" people. Dogs, foxes, wolves, coyotes, etc. are ALL canines. ALL people around the world in throughout history, are humans. Both biology and the Bible teach that there is only ONE race. People are ALL the same color, it is a skin pigment called melanin (shades of tan). Think about it; imagine if you lined up a hundred people with a full range of skin colors, from very light on one end to very dark at the other. Where in the middle would you or anyone else be able to say all those to the right are "WHITE" and all to the left are "BLACK"?
- There are different cultures, and some cultures are not good (like ISIS).
- The idea and belief in different races was made up by racists many generations ago. They believed they were better than other people groups biologically. Darwin was a racist and his theory of evolution was used by racists to justify racism. They taught that some people groups were more evolved (themselves - light colored Europeans). They taught that darker melanin people were less evolved and that some were more ape-like than human. Some of these racists even hunted Australian aborigine people, killed and stuffed their bodies to put them in museums as animals.

Here is the verse in English alone:

THINK ABOUT IT:
We are dependent on the writings and recordings of others in order to learn about the past. Many men and women have written many books about history. But only one was directly led by God - the Bible (THE Book). Sadly, very few people critically examine the writings of human historians and even less carefully examine the book of His-story led by our Creator.

History is His-story, God revealing His Self-sacrificing character, while at the same time exposing mankind's self-serving, selfish nature. Our "goodness" is infinitely less than the pure, unselfish love of God. So a wise person will humbly depend on His inspired Word, not the mere words of men.

"See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ." Colossian 2:8

From Lucifer's rebellion and temptation of Adam/Eve in God's Garden of Eden to the Tower of Babel (Babylon) to modern Islam/ISIS/Iran/Iraq/etc, history is the story of a war between God and all that stands against Him.

The Exodus from Egypt

Verses for a few weeks: Exo 3:14-15

BACKGROUND - [Just as God told Abraham hundreds of years earlier, his descendants would be held as slaves for 400 years in Egypt because of sin, but then God would rescue them. This prophecy like all prophecy in the bible was fulfilled accurately. After about 400 years of captive slavery, God spoke to Moses in the vision of the burning bush, and told Moses to confront Pharoah and tell him to let God's people, Israel, go from Egypt.

Moses's response was to panic in fear about this job God wanted him to do. Moses said he couldn't do it because he was a poor speaker. Literally, Moses said he was "heave of tongue", which meant he had a speech disability. God in the New Testament reveals that He loves to call/choose people to accomplish His will and work whom the world thinks are weak, untalented, uneducated, or disabled. That way they and others realize that what they accomplish is because of God, NOT their own abilities.
(see 1 Corinthians
1:18-31; 2 Cor 12) So if YOU feel like you are too untalented or so disabled that you could not do wonderful things for God and others, then remember Moses, the uneducated disciples, etc.

Then Moses said he was afraid that the people of Israel would doubt that God really appeared to him. Moses was afraid the people would ask what God's NAME was. So God told Moses His personal Holy name: "I AM who I AM".
** God's name in Hebrew is YHWH, which is often pronouned in English as either JeHoVaH or YaHWeH. The term comes from the Hebrew verb, "havah" that means "to exist" or "to be". This is because GOD IS THE ONLY SELF-EXISTENT BEING.
** Remember that JESUS many times referred to Himself as the self-existent I AM
(John 8:58). This is why the Jewish leaders had the Roman Leaders execute/crucify Jesus. It was for the crime of blasphemy for claiming to be the Self-Existent Creator God in human form.

THE VERSE - EXODUS 3:14-15
14 God said to Moses, “I AM who I AM.
This is what you are to say to the Israelites:
I AM has sent me to you.’”

15 God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites,
‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham,
the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob - has sent me to you.’

“This is my name forever,
the name you shall call me
from generation to generation.
